It can be alarming when something breaks or feels wrong with your braces, but don’t panic! True orthodontic emergencies are actually quite rare. Most issues, while annoying, can be managed temporarily at home until you can get to our office.
At Explore Orthodontics, we are committed to being there for our patients. Whether you are dealing with a poking wire or a loose bracket, this guide will help you handle the situation calmly and effectively.
What Constitutes a True Emergency?
A true emergency involves severe pain or trauma to the mouth that you cannot handle yourself. If you experience a direct injury to your face or teeth, or if you have swelling and severe pain that doesn’t respond to medication, please call our Santa Maria orthodontist office immediately. If you cannot reach us, go to the emergency room.
For most other issues—like broken appliances or general discomfort—you can likely make yourself comfortable using the tips below before calling us to schedule a repair.
Managing Common Issues at Home
You might be surprised to learn that you can solve many common “emergencies” with items you already have at home or in your braces kit.
General Soreness
When you first get braces or have them adjusted, your mouth will likely feel tender for three to five days. This is normal!
- Relief: Stick to a soft diet (soup, yogurt, mashed potatoes).
- Rinse: Swish with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water) to soothe irritated gums.
- Medication: You can take over-the-counter pain relievers like Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) or Ibuprofen (Motrin®) if needed.
Poking Wires
As teeth move, the wire can sometimes poke out the back of the last bracket.
- The Fix: Use the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire down or back into place.
- Comfort: Place a small ball of orthodontic wax over the sharp end.
- Last Resort: If you cannot come in soon and the wire is painful, you may use clean fingernail clippers to carefully snip the wire behind the last secure bracket.
Loose Brackets or Bands
Hard or sticky foods can sometimes knock a bracket loose.
- Still Attached: If the bracket is loose but still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax if it bothers you.
- Came Off: If the bracket or band comes off completely, place it in a plastic bag or envelope and bring it to your next appointment.
Loose Wires
If a wire comes out of the tube or bracket:
- The Fix: Use a pair of clean tweezers or needle-nosed pliers to gently guide the wire back into the tube.
- Secure It: You can also use a piece of dental floss to tie the wire to the bracket if the colored ring has come off.
Handling Accidents and Trauma
If you play sports, we highly recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your appliances and teeth. In the event of a sports accident, check your mouth immediately. If you notice any loose teeth or severe damage to your appliances, contact us right away for emergency orthodontic care in Santa Maria.
We Are Always Here to Support You
Even if you successfully fix a problem at home, it is important to let us know. A broken appliance can slow down your treatment progress if left unchecked. Please call our office as soon as possible after any breakage so we can schedule a specific time to repair it.
Your healthy, confident smile is our top priority!
