Faster, More Efficient Smiles with TADs

At Explore Orthodontics in Santa Maria, we use the latest technology to make your treatment as effective and comfortable as possible. In some cases, we use a small but powerful tool called a Temporary Anchorage Device, or TAD.

TADs are tiny, sterile titanium anchors used to help move teeth more efficiently. While not every patient needs them, they can be a game-changer for complex cases, often speeding up treatment times and eliminating the need for more cumbersome appliances like headgear.

What Are TADs and How Do They Work?

Think of a TAD as a temporary anchor point. In traditional orthodontics, we often use back teeth to pull front teeth into place. However, sometimes we need a stronger, immovable anchor to achieve specific movements without unwanted shifting of other teeth.

That’s where TADs come in. By placing a small anchor in the gum tissue and jawbone, our board-certified orthodontist can direct force exactly where it’s needed. This allows for precise tooth movement that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve with braces alone.

The Benefits of Using TADs

Using TADs as part of your orthodontic plan offers several significant advantages:

  • Faster Treatment: By providing a stable anchor, TADs can often reduce the total time you spend in braces.
  • Better Results: They allow for complex tooth movements, often correcting bites without the need for jaw surgery.
  • Improved Comfort: TADs are often used as a modern, more comfortable alternative to bulky headgear.
  • Versatility: They can be used to close spaces, correct open bites, or upright tipped molars.

What to Expect During Placement

The idea of having a device placed in your mouth might sound intimidating, but the process is actually very simple and quick.

  1. Numbing the Area: We use a strong local anesthetic to numb the gum tissue and jawbone where the TAD will be placed.
  2. Placement: Your orthodontist gently places the TAD. The entire process takes just a few minutes.
  3. Sensation: You may feel a slight pressure during placement, but because the bone has no nerve endings, the procedure itself is generally pain-free.
  4. Aftercare: Once the numbness wears off, you might feel minor sensitivity for a day or so, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers like Tylenol®.

Care and Maintenance

Taking care of a TAD is easy and fits right into your daily routine.

  • Keep it Clean: Brush gently around the TAD just as you do your braces, at least three times a day.
  • Use Mouthwash: We may provide an antimicrobial mouthwash to use twice daily to keep the area healthy and infection-free.
  • Avoid Irritation: Don’t fidget with the device using your tongue or fingers.

Once your treatment goals are met, removing the TAD is a quick and comfortable process that takes just a few minutes and requires no anesthesia.
