At Explore Orthodontics, we want to make sure your hard work pays off forever. Here are our essential tips for retainer care in Santa Maria to keep your smile looking its best.
Wearing Your Retainer
Your teeth have a natural tendency to want to move back to their original positions. Your retainer is the only thing stopping them!
- Follow the Schedule: Wear your retainer at all times, unless Dr. Brandon Malan instructs otherwise. Consistency is key to setting your smile.
- Remove for Eating: Always take your retainer out when eating. This prevents damage and keeps food from getting trapped against your teeth.
- Keep it Safe: When it is not in your mouth, it should always be in its case. Most retainers are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants because they were wrapped in a napkin and accidentally thrown away!
Cleaning and Hygiene
A clean retainer leads to a healthy mouth. Bacteria and plaque can build up on your appliance just like they do on your teeth.
- Daily Brushing: Clean your retainer thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush. This removes plaque and eliminates odors.
- Water Temperature: Always use cold water. Hot water can warp the plastic and ruin the fit of your retainer.
- Deep Cleaning: You can use Efferdent® or other orthodontic appliance cleaners for a fresh soak, but remember that these do not take the place of daily brushing.
Avoiding Damage and Loss
Retainers are durable, but they are not indestructible. Proper storage and care will help you avoid expensive replacements.
- “In Your Face or In the Case”: Memorize this phrase! Never put your retainer in your pocket, as it can easily break or get crushed.
- Watch Out for Pets: Dogs love to chew on retainers. Keep your case closed and out of reach of your furry friends.
- Avoid Heat: Keep retainers away from hot water, hot car dashboards, the washing machine, and direct sunlight. Heat distortion is a common reason retainers need replacing.
Adjusting to Your Retainer
When you first start wearing your retainer, you might notice a few changes. This is completely normal!
- Speech: You may find it difficult to speak clearly at first. The best way to get used to it is to practice speaking, reading, or singing out loud. Your tongue will adjust quickly.
- Saliva: You might experience increased saliva flow for a few days. This will subside as your mouth gets used to the appliance.
